Interview #1

For my first interview, I wanted to get an idea of what some of the people that I see everyday think about the issue. It`s amazing how I spend everyday with these young men, but don`t ever talk to them about the evident struggles that they may face.

Zaeem Walker and Lewis Ford were first to be interviewed, who are actually brothers.

Here is what Zaeem Walker had to say:

I live in South Philly, near the Tasker area. I feel that my area is not really diverse, like it`s more black people that white people. You may see maybe somebody different walking down the street, but that's rare. The most appealing thing to my neighborhood would probably be the sports. Since we are right next to the stadium, we have a lot of football teams and baseball teams that are well known in South Philly. The worst part of my neighborhood would probably be the violence and the drugs that have been around there. It`s not gang related, but it does have a lot to do with family. Like their father may have sold drugs, so now their son is doing it and so on. One of the bad memories that I had would probably be when you're sitting in the house and you hear a story about how somebody got shot and all you can think about is how that could have been you.

Here is what Lewis Ford had to say:

I live in the North Philadelphia area, mostly near Olney. Sometimes when I come to school I feel that I can act a certain way, but when I go to my house, I have to put on this face where I can`t really be funny or smile a lot because people may get the wrong idea. The most memorbale part of my neighborhood is that we really care about eachother and are close in our community. The worst part of my community is the violence that takes place, especially because we have a lot of children in our community. Growing up as a black man in my neighborhood was not really hard, I don`t think I had to live up to a stereotype because my family made sure that I was involved in almost everything that they could get me in. I don`t know what a man really is, because my dad is not in my life, but if I had to say, I would say it is someone that is there for their family. Somone who will never leave their family, like whatmy father did. I think asa black people we need to take responsibility of what we do, like it starts with us first.
